Psychedelics in the Humanities: Visionary Art and Hyperspace Philosophy beyond Postmodernism

Synopsis:

The scientific research community is in the midst of a “psychedelic renaissance,” but sanctioned platforms for mainstream discussion are heavily weighted in the direction of “objective” scientific research. As such, it is an opportune time to address the question of psychedelics and their continuing impact on culture from a critical perspective—and to confront the issues that have impeded this conversation. In this talk, I will examine the importance of psychedelics and visionary states of consciousness to art and literary history, arguing for the integration of psychedelic discourse into cultural studies and the humanities. Psychedelic studies should expand from the artificial disciplinary confines of medicine and anthropology to include philosophy and other humanistic avenues of inquiry, which will serve to enrich this promising, interdisciplinary field. By examining the historical development of "hyperspace philosophy" and the impact of higher dimensions on artists ranging from William Blake to the cubists to the interdimensional and visionary artists of the modern day, I argue for a "performative" understanding of the spiritual function of art that moves beyond outdated notions of ironic postmodernism.
